When to Go on a Bucket-List River Cruise
Season decides comfort — and on some rivers, the route itself.
Plan My Bucket-List River CruiseEvery bucket list river has a best season, and on some rivers the season changes where the ship can go. Use this table as a starting point, then let us check the exact dates for your year.
Best Months for Each Journey
| Journey | Main season | Why | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam–Budapest, Rhine & Danube | April–October; Christmas markets late Nov–Dec | Long days, gardens and vineyards; festive markets in December. | Spring high water and late-summer low water. |
| Lower Danube to the Black Sea | Spring and early autumn | Comfortable temperatures for the long excursions. | Summer heat on the Romanian plain. |
| Nile | October–April | Cooler days for temple visits. | Very hot June–August. |
| Mekong & Angkor | Year-round on many ships | High water (roughly Aug–Dec) lets ships reach farther toward Siem Reap. | Low water means a road or air transfer to Siem Reap. |
| Peruvian Amazon | Year-round | High water lets skiffs go deeper into the forest; low water exposes beaches and trails. | Heat and humidity in every month. |
| Ganges & Brahmaputra | About October–March | Cool, dry weather after the monsoon. | Fog on winter mornings. |
| Chobe | Dry season, about May–October | Animals gather at the river as inland water dries up. | Heat builds toward October. |
| Mississippi | Spring and autumn | Mild weather and fall color on the Upper river. | Summer heat in the South. |
| Douro | Spring to autumn; harvest in September | Terraces green in spring, golden at harvest. | Midsummer heat in the upper valley. |
Shoulder Months Are Often the Sweet Spot
On most of these rivers the months either side of peak season bring fewer crowds ashore and more cabin choice, with weather that is usually still kind. Late April on the Rhine, early November on the Nile and early December on the Mekong are good examples. The trade-off is a little less certainty about weather and water.
For the Mekong in particular, Mekong Riverboat Cruises explains the high- and low-water routes; for the Danube’s seasons, see Danube Riverboat Cruises; for Africa, African River Cruises.

When to Go: Common Questions
Is there a bad time for a European river cruise?
Winter outside the Christmas-market weeks is quiet and many ships are laid up. In very dry summers low water can affect the Rhine and Danube, and spring snowmelt can bring high water; lines adjust itineraries when that happens.
When is the Nile too hot?
June to August is very hot in Luxor and Aswan, and some ships pause or sail less often. October to April is the main season.
Do the seasons change from year to year?
Yes. Water levels depend on rain and snowmelt, so the months in our table are the usual pattern, not a promise. Lines publish their own season dates; our advisors check them for your year.
