The Best River Cruise Ships in Europe
Same lock-sized hulls, very different ideas inside.
Plan My Bucket-List River CruiseThe best river cruise ships in Europe all work within the same strict limits — the length of a lock, the height of a bridge — so the differences are clever rather than enormous. Here is what sets the notable ships and ship classes apart.
Notable Ships and Classes on Europe’s Rivers
| Ship or class | Line | What stands out |
|---|---|---|
| Longships | Viking | Up to 190 guests and 95 staterooms on a 443 ft (135 m) hull; Explorer Suites with wraparound verandas at the stern; an indoor-outdoor Aquavit Terrace at the bow. |
| AmaMagna | AmaWaterways | About 22 m wide — roughly double the usual — with about 196 guests, so cabins and lounges are unusually spacious. |
| AmaSofia and AmaFiora | AmaWaterways | AmaSofia joins in spring 2026 with up to 156 guests; AmaFiora is due on the Rhine in 2027. |
| Space-Ships | Scenic | Up to 163 guests; Sun Lounge balconies in most suites and butler service for every suite. |
| Suite Ships | Avalon Waterways | Panorama Suites whose wall-to-wall window opens about 7 ft wide in Europe, with beds facing the view. |
| ms Inspire class | Tauck | 130 guests on ms Inspire, with twenty-two 300 sq ft Tauck Suites. |
| Star-Ships | Emerald Cruises | A pool on the top deck area that converts to a cinema in the evening. |
| Boutique fleet | Uniworld | Each ship individually decorated, with art and antiques chosen for it. |
Inside the Lock-Sized Box
Because hull sizes are fixed, the real choices are inside. Do you want a full step-out balcony or a French balcony that leaves more room inside the cabin? A single main restaurant or an extra small venue? A top-deck walking track, a pool, or more shade? Viking’s Longships put suites at the stern and a terrace at the bow; Avalon turns the bed toward the window; Scenic and AmaWaterways offer balconies you can close into an indoor lounge in cool weather.

Best River Cruise Ships in Europe: FAQ
Why do most European river ships look alike?
They are built to the maximum length and width the locks of the Rhine-Main-Danube system allow, and low enough for its bridges. Lines compete inside that box with cabin layouts, balconies and public spaces.
Which European river ship is the widest?
AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna, at about 22 metres, is roughly twice the width of a standard river ship. It sails the Danube, where the locks are larger than on the Main.
Are newer ships always better?
Not always. A well-refurbished ship can feel as fresh as a new one, and some older ships have larger standard cabins. Ask when the ship was built and when it was last refitted.
